Letters of the word LEADERSHIP stand proudly at the entrance of Kenneth Gardner Elementary School today as volunteers stand proudly reading books to students inside. For those of you who don't know, today is Theodor Suess Geisel, better known as, Dr. Seuss's birthday! In honor of this day, the National Education Association sponsors Read Across America day each year to encourage students to read all year long. Angela Coker, Mary Grace McGee and Heather McClary, all members of Santee Electric Cooperative's (SEC) Women Involved in Rural Electrification (WIRE) group volunteered their lunch break to read to students. Just looking at the ladies' faces as they read and seeing the children's eyes light up was magical, each receiving just as much enjoyment as the other. When they finished at the first school, they also went and read to other students at W.M. Anderson Primary School. WIRE participates in similar projects throughout the year. This year, they will be taking up donations for food pantries, coats for the needy and lots of other service projects in the cooperative's four county service area. WIRE is open to any woman who works at SEC, is married to someone who works at SEC or receives their electricity from SEC. Look on our social media outlets and our website, www.santee.org for upcoming projects and if you are interested in joining the group, call Mary Grace McGee at 1-843-355-0599.
